The service

What Our Drainage Service Covers

Our drainage service covers problems that stop wastewater from leaving your home properly: blocked sinks, baths, and showers; blocked or overflowing toilets; slow-draining pipework; outside drains and gullies; and smells coming from drains inside or outside the property.

You might need this service if water drains slowly, a blockage keeps coming back, you can smell drains indoors, or an outside drain is overflowing or flooding.

Catching it early

Signs You Have a Drainage Problem

Water Drains More Slowly

A sink, bath or shower that empties slowly is the first sign of a blockage building up. Clearing it early is far simpler.

Noises From the Drains

Bubbling noises mean air is trapped behind a partial blockage further down the pipe and it very rarely clears on its own.

Smells Inside or Outside

A drain smell indoors often means a dried-out trap or a partial blockage. Smells outside suggest a blockage in the drain run.

Water Backs Up or Overflows

Water rising in a sink or toilet, or a gully overflowing outside, means the blockage is stopping flow and needs clearing.

The Same Blockage Keeps Returning

A drain that blocks again weeks after clearing has an underlying cause, such as damaged pipework, scale build-up, or roots.

More Than One Drain Is Affected

When several sinks, baths or toilets slow down at the same time, the blockage is usually in the main drain, not one pipe.

Who is responsible

Your Drain or the Water Company’s?

You are usually responsible for the private drain inside your property boundary that serves only your home. Shared sewers and pipes beyond your boundary are usually the water company’s job.

Not sure where your blockage sits? Describe what is happening, and we can help you work out whether it is your drain or one the water company should clear at no cost to you.

What causes them

Common Causes of Blocked Drains

Fat, Grease, and Food Waste

Cooking fat poured down the sink sets inside the pipe and traps food debris, slowly narrowing the drain. The most common cause of kitchen blockages.

Hair and Soap

Hair binds with soap scum in bathroom pipes and forms stubborn blockages in showers and basins. A drain guard prevents most of them.

Wet Wipes and Sanitary Products

Wipes labelled flushable do not break down like toilet paper and cause many blockages. Only pee, poo, and paper should go down the toilet.

Scale and Ageing Pipework

Hard water scale narrows older pipes, and cracked or misaligned pipework catches debris. Recurring blockages often mean the pipe itself is the problem.

Common questions

Drainage FAQs

Who is responsible for a blocked drain?

You are usually responsible for the drain inside your property boundary that serves only your home. Once drains join a neighbour’s or leave your boundary, they are usually the water company’s responsibility. If you are unsure, tell us where the problem shows itself, and we can help you work out whose pipe is affected.

A plunger or a cleared drain guard sorts many minor blockages, especially hair in bathroom wastes. Avoid repeated chemical unblockers, because they can damage older pipework and often just push the blockage deeper. If a drain blocks again soon after you clear it, the problem is further down the pipework and needs professional attention.

Recurring blockages have an underlying cause. Common ones are scale narrowing the pipe, damaged or misaligned pipework catching debris, roots entering outside drains, or wipes and cooking fat going down regularly. Clearing the symptom without finding the cause means the blockage returns every few weeks.

In the kitchen: cooking fat, oil, coffee grounds, and food scraps. In the bathroom: wet wipes, including those labelled flushable, sanitary products, cotton buds, and dental floss. Outside: leaves and garden debris in gullies. Most recurring blockages stop once the cause stops entering the drain.

Treat it as urgent when water or sewage backs up into the property, an outside drain overflows near the house, or you cannot use your only toilet. Slow drainage and gurgling are worth fixing soon but are not emergencies, and dealing with them early usually avoids an urgent callout later.
