What an Unvented Cylinder Is

An unvented cylinder stores hot water and delivers it at mains pressure, with no cold water tank in the loft. Because it is fed straight from the mains, you get a strong, consistent flow at every tap and shower, even when several run at once.

That makes it the natural partner for a system boiler in a home with more than one bathroom, where a combi boiler would struggle to supply two showers at the same time.

Our work covers installing new unvented cylinders, replacing old ones, and the servicing and repairs needed to keep them safe and efficient.

Is it right for you

Signs an Unvented Cylinder Suits Your Home

Two or More Bathrooms in Use at Once

Stored hot water at mains pressure means a shower in the en suite does not reduce the flow to the bathroom tap next door.

Your Showers Are Weak

Gravity-fed systems depend on height, not pressure. An unvented cylinder delivers mains-pressure hot water and transforms shower performance.

You Want the Loft Space Back

An unvented cylinder needs no cold water tank in the loft. Removing the tank frees up space and removes a common source of leaks.

Your Current Cylinder Is Old

Ageing cylinders lose efficiency, and their controls wear out. A modern unvented cylinder improves both performance and safety.

You Are Adding Bathrooms

Extensions, loft conversions, and new bathrooms all raise hot water demand, and a cylinder sized to your household handles it.

Baths Take Too Long to Fill

A bath that takes an age to fill or runs cold halfway through shows your system cannot store or deliver enough hot water.

What the work involves

What an Unvented Cylinder Installation Covers

Sizing the cylinder

The cylinder must match your household’s hot water use. Too small and it runs cold on busy mornings. Too large and you pay to heat water you never use.

Installing the safety controls

Unvented cylinders operate under high pressure and require safety valves, meaning building regulations mandate a qualified engineer for the job.

Connecting to your boiler

The cylinder works with a system or regular boiler, heating stored water so it is ready when you need it. We make sure the two are matched properly.

Annual servicing

The safety devices on an unvented cylinder need checking every year. Annual servicing keeps the cylinder safe, efficient, and within its warranty terms.

Common questions

Unvented Cylinder FAQs

What is the difference between a vented and an unvented cylinder?

A vented cylinder is fed by a cold water tank in the loft, so hot water flow depends on gravity and is often weak upstairs. An unvented cylinder connects directly to the mains, so hot water comes out at mains pressure at every outlet. It also removes the need for the loft tank, freeing up space and removing a common source of leaks.

No. A combi boiler heats water on demand and does not use a cylinder at all. Cylinders pair with system and regular boilers. If your home has one bathroom and modest hot water use, a combi is usually the simpler choice. If several bathrooms are used at once, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder is the better setup.

Once a year. The service checks the pressure relief valve, temperature relief valve, and expansion vessel, which are the safety devices a pressurised cylinder depends on. Annual servicing also keeps the manufacturer warranty valid and spots wear before it becomes a fault or a leak.

The discharge pipe carries water released by the safety valves, and a small amount of dripping during heating can be normal. Constant dripping usually means a relief valve is passing or the expansion vessel has lost its charge, both of which need attention. It is rarely urgent, but do not leave it for weeks, because a failed safety device affects the whole system.

For a home with one bathroom and good mains pressure, a combi boiler is simpler and frees up cupboard space. For a home with two or more bathrooms where showers run at the same time, an unvented cylinder with a system boiler supplies both at full flow, which a combi cannot. Your mains pressure, household size, and existing pipework decide it, so we check before recommending either.
